Experience

Helen is a veteran journalist with more than 17 years of experience, mostly in business and finance news. She is passionate about making complicated topics easy for the layperson to understand and compulsive about accuracy and transparency. She joined The Balance in June 2019 and became senior news editor in May 2020 to lead the expansion of the site's personal finance news coverage.

Helen started her financial journalism career at American Banker in 1999 after four years as a reporter for two daily newspapers. In 2000, she moved to Bloomberg, where she served as a banking and insurance reporter and then as a team leader and editor covering the U.S. insurance trade and billionaire investor Warren Buffett. Helen’s team ran some of the biggest storylines in the industry, including the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the fall of AIG CEO Hank Greenberg. 

Helen later became the editorial director of content syndication for Bloomberg, heading up the editorial side of news graphics and overseeing partnerships with newspapers including the San Francisco Chronicle and the Washington Post. She left Bloomberg in 2011 to start a family, re-entering the workforce when she joined The Balance.

Education

Helen has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of New Hampshire, where she graduated summa cum laude.
